Useful Terms When Discussing Speaker Cables

 

AWG-The gauge, or size of the speaker cable. The smaller the number, the larger conductors in the cable.

Speakon Connector- Locking connectors used on speaker cables. Available in 2, 4 or 8 conductor.

Banana Plug-Two pole connector used to connect a speaker cable to the output terminals on some amplifiers.

1/4 Inch Connector-Standard connectors used on speaker cables and amplifiers. Normally two conductor.

Jacket-The rubber-like material used to surround and protect the copper conductors in a mic cable.

Speaker multicable-A single cable with multiple conductor pairs-intended to replace several single cables.

Output Panel-Point on an amplifier or amplifier rack where multiple speaker cables can be connected.

Pin out-The cabling configuration assigned to the numbered pins inside Speakon connectore or other multipin connectors used on speaker cables.

Jumper cable-A short version of a speaker cable, usually used for connecting two speakers located closely together.

Roll off-The characteristic of a speaker cable to loose signal quality as the cable length is extended.

Biamplified-Use of multiple amplifier channels (2)to power different drivers within a single speaker cabinet. This normally makes use of a multi conductor speaker cable (4 conductors).

Triamplified-Use of multiple amplifier channels (3)to power different drivers within a single speaker cabinet. This normally makes use of a multi conductor speaker cable (6 conductors).
